IELTS Writing Task 2 is the 250-word essay that accounts for two-thirds of your Writing section score. It is where most Kerala students lose the most marks — and where targeted coaching makes the biggest difference. This guide covers the structure, vocabulary, and specific mistakes Malayalam speakers need to avoid.
You have 40 minutes to write a minimum 250-word essay responding to a given statement or question. The essay is scored on four criteria:
| Criterion | Weight | Band 7 Standard |
|---|---|---|
| Task Response | 25% | Addresses all parts of the task, clear position throughout |
| Coherence & Cohesion | 25% | Information logically organised, range of cohesive devices |
| Lexical Resource | 25% | Wide range of vocabulary, less common items used appropriately |
| Grammatical Range & Accuracy | 25% | Mix of complex and simple structures, few errors |
Band 7 essays almost always follow a 4-paragraph structure. Do not deviate from this in the exam:
If the question says "Many people believe social media has a negative impact on society", your introduction must not start with "Many people believe social media has a negative impact on society". Examiners mark exact copied language as Band 5 for Lexical Resource regardless of what you write elsewhere. Always paraphrase: "Social networking platforms are increasingly viewed as detrimental to communities" — same meaning, different words.
Kerala students often write essays in a list format: "There are many advantages. First, it is good for economy. Second, it helps people. Third, it creates jobs." This is Band 5 Task Response because no point is developed with evidence and explanation. Band 7 requires each point to be fully developed in one paragraph, not listed briefly.
These phrases are so overused by Indian students that examiners notice them immediately. They signal memorised essay openings which lower your Lexical Resource score. Start with a direct paraphrase of the statement instead.
IELTS Writing is an academic register. Do not use: can't, it's, they're, lots of, a lot of, things, stuff, get. Use: cannot, it is, they are, numerous, a significant number of, aspects, elements, obtain/achieve.
For "To what extent do you agree or disagree?" questions, you must state a clear position (fully agree, mostly agree, or fully disagree). Kerala students often try to "balance" their answer and end up with no clear position — this is directly penalised under Task Response as "no consistent position" = Band 5.
Replace these overused words with higher-band alternatives:
| Avoid (Band 5–6) | Use Instead (Band 7) |
|---|---|
| good | beneficial, advantageous, constructive |
| bad | detrimental, harmful, counterproductive |
| important | crucial, pivotal, indispensable |
| many people | a considerable proportion of individuals, numerous individuals |
| because | owing to the fact that, given that, as a result of |
| for example | to illustrate, a case in point would be, this is exemplified by |
| also | furthermore, in addition, moreover |
| but | however, nevertheless, on the other hand |
In group classes, a Writing Task 2 essay gets a score and perhaps a few general comments. In Language-X Academy's personal coaching, every essay you submit is corrected sentence-by-sentence with specific explanations tied to the four scoring criteria. You understand exactly why each sentence is Band 6 or Band 7, and how to fix it. This targeted feedback is why students move from Band 5.5 to Band 7.0 in Writing within the 1-month program.
