PTE Speaking is scored by an AI, not a human examiner. This is both a challenge and an advantage for Kerala students — once you understand exactly what the AI is measuring, you can engineer your responses to maximise your score. This guide covers all 5 PTE Speaking task types with specific AI-scoring strategies.
| Task | Time | Skills Scored | Impact |
|---|---|---|---|
| Read Aloud | 30–40 sec per item | Speaking + Reading | Very High |
| Repeat Sentence | 15 sec per item | Speaking + Listening | Very High |
| Describe Image | 40 sec per item | Speaking only | High |
| Re-tell Lecture | 40 sec per item | Speaking + Listening | High |
| Answer Short Question | 10 sec per item | Speaking + Listening | Medium |
Read Aloud is simultaneously scored for Speaking (oral fluency, pronunciation) and Reading (reading aloud skills). Missing a word or stumbling causes deductions in both sections. This is why it has the highest impact of any single task type.
AI scoring criteria for Read Aloud:
Strategy for Kerala students: Read the text silently for 10 seconds before the microphone opens. Identify difficult words and mentally rehearse them. Speak at a moderate pace — not too fast (clarity suffers) and not too slow (the AI interprets pauses as hesitation). Do not correct yourself mid-word — finish the word as best you can and continue.
Repeat Sentence asks you to repeat a sentence you hear exactly. The sentences get progressively longer. The AI gives partial credit — every word you repeat correctly scores a point, even if you miss others. This is the single most important strategy many Kerala students miss: never leave Repeat Sentence blank. Even if you only caught 4 words of a 12-word sentence, say those 4 words. Partial credit is always better than zero.
Memory trick: Hold the sentence in chunks, not individual words. "The government / has introduced / new policies / to address / climate change" — 5 chunks of 2–4 words each are easier to remember than 12 separate words.
You have 25 seconds to study the image and 40 seconds to describe it. The AI does not assess whether your description is correct or insightful — it assesses whether your English is fluent, pronounceable, and grammatically varied. Use this template for every image type:
This template works for graphs, photographs, maps, processes, and tables. It ensures you never run out of content or go silent — which would severely hurt your Oral Fluency score.
You hear a 60–90 second academic lecture, then have 40 seconds to re-tell it. You will not remember everything — and you do not need to. Aim to identify and note: (1) the topic, (2) the main argument or finding, (3) one supporting detail or example. Structure your re-tell: "The lecture discussed [topic]. The main point was that [main argument]. This was supported by [one detail]." Even a partially accurate re-tell that is fluent and clear scores well.
PTE Speaking improvement requires task-specific practice and immediate feedback on pronunciation and fluency. In Language-X Academy's personal coaching sessions, every PTE Speaking task type is practised individually. Your Malayalam-influenced pronunciation patterns — retroflex consonants, rising intonation, vowel length — are identified in the first session and corrected throughout the program. Students who come to us with PTE Speaking scores in the 50s–60s regularly exit with 75–85 after 4 weeks of personal coaching.
