How Many Times Can You Take IELTS in Kerala? — Retake Rules, Waiting Periods & IDP Policy 2026

By Athul Mohan·IDP Certified IELTS & PTE Trainer·Updated April 2026

If you did not achieve your target IELTS band on your first attempt, you are not alone — and the good news is that IELTS has no limit on the number of times you can take the test. Here is everything Kerala students need to know about IELTS retake rules and how to improve your score on the next attempt.

Is There a Limit to How Many Times You Can Take IELTS?

No. There is no limit to the number of times you can take the IELTS test. You can take it as many times as needed. There is also no mandatory waiting period between attempts — you can register for a new test immediately after receiving your results from a previous attempt.

IELTS One Skill Retake — The New Option for Kerala Students

IELTS now offers a One Skill Retake option at selected centres in India. This allows you to retake just one section (Listening, Reading, Writing, or Speaking) within 60 days of your original test, rather than sitting the full 4-section exam again. This is especially useful if you scored 7.0 in three sections but 6.5 in one — you retake only that section. Check with your local IDP or British Council centre in Kerala for availability.

When Should Kerala Students Retake IELTS?

You should retake IELTS when:

You should NOT retake immediately after a failed attempt without additional preparation. The test does not change significantly between attempts — your score will not improve unless your underlying skills improve. Most Kerala students who retake without changing their preparation strategy score within 0.5 bands of their previous result.

EOR — Enquiry on Results

If you believe your IELTS score does not reflect your actual ability, you can apply for an Enquiry on Results (EOR) within 6 weeks of receiving your score report. The EOR is a re-marking of your Writing and Speaking sections by senior IELTS examiners. The fee (approximately ₹12,000) is refunded if your score improves. Speaking and Writing are the most common sections for EOR applications — Listening and Reading are computer-marked and very rarely change on re-mark.

How Language-X Academy Helps After a Failed IELTS Attempt

The most common reason Kerala students come to Language-X Academy is after a failed IELTS attempt at another coaching institute. The diagnosis session at Language-X Academy identifies exactly which specific errors within each band descriptor caused your score — not just "improve your Writing" but "your Writing Task 2 Task Response is Band 5 because you are not maintaining a consistent position". This specificity is what changes results on the second attempt.

Students who join after a failed first attempt typically achieve their target band within the next sitting after 1 month of personal coaching. The key is understanding precisely what went wrong, not just practising more of the same.
