Kerala is one of India's largest exporters of nursing professionals. Every year, thousands of Kerala nurses prepare IELTS to work in the UK, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. This guide covers the exact scores required by each country's nursing regulator — and how to achieve them with personal coaching.
The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) in the UK requires IELTS Academic Band 7.0 in all four components — Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking — achieved in a single sitting. There is one important exception: a score of 6.5 in Writing is accepted if all other three bands are 7.0 or above.
| Section | Minimum Band Required | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Listening | 7.0 | No exceptions |
| Reading | 7.0 | No exceptions |
| Writing | 6.5 (or 7.0) | 6.5 accepted if other 3 are 7.0+ |
| Speaking | 7.0 | No exceptions |
| Overall | 7.0 | Must be from IELTS Academic only |
Important: The NMC does not accept IELTS General Training for nursing registration. You must take IELTS Academic. IELTS scores are valid for 2 years from the test date.
The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) requires IELTS Academic with Band 7.0 in each section and an overall band of 7.0. No section can fall below 7.0 — even if your overall is 8.0, a 6.5 in any one section means rejection.
Canada is more complex because each province has its own nursing regulator. Most require IELTS Academic Band 6.5–7.0 in all components for nursing registration. For the Canadian immigration pathway (Express Entry), IELTS General Training is used — but for provincial nursing registration, IELTS Academic is required separately. Always check the specific requirement of the province you're applying to.
The Nursing Council of New Zealand requires IELTS Academic Band 7.0 overall with no band below 6.5. OET is also accepted with Grade B in all sections.
| Country | Regulator | Minimum Band | Test Type |
|---|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom | NMC | 7.0 each (6.5 Writing ok) | IELTS Academic |
| Australia | AHPRA | 7.0 each band | IELTS Academic |
| Canada (most provinces) | Provincial Boards | 6.5–7.0 each | IELTS Academic |
| New Zealand | NCNZ | 7.0 overall, no band below 6.5 | IELTS Academic |
| UAE / Singapore | Various | 6.0–6.5 overall | IELTS Academic |
The most common reason Kerala nurses fail to meet the NMC or AHPRA requirement is Writing — specifically IELTS Writing Task 2 (the 250-word essay). Kerala nurses typically score 7.0+ in Listening and Reading but fall short in Writing due to:
Athul Mohan has coached over 500 Kerala students including hundreds of nurses preparing for UK, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand registration. The personal one-to-one approach means your training targets exactly which section — often Writing — is holding you back, rather than repeating content you've already mastered.
A typical nurse coaching plan at Language-X Academy:
OET (Occupational English Test) is accepted by the NMC, AHPRA, Nursing Council NZ, and many other nursing regulators. Many Kerala nurses find OET more achievable because it uses healthcare-specific scenarios — clinical notes, patient letters, ward interactions — that nurses already understand. Language-X Academy advises nurses on a case-by-case basis which exam suits their existing English level and target country.
