Pearson PTE · 2026 Guide
Everything you need to know — test format, sections, scoring, accepted uses, and which exam is right for your goals.
The Pearson Test of English (PTE) is a fully computer-based English proficiency exam trusted by thousands of universities, colleges, and immigration bodies worldwide. Unlike many English tests, PTE is scored entirely by AI — eliminating human examiner bias and delivering results remarkably fast.
There are two distinct versions: PTE Academic and PTE Core. While they share the same computer-based format and AI scoring engine, they serve very different purposes. Choosing the wrong one could mean your score is not accepted — so understanding the difference is essential before you register.
PTE Academic
University & Professional
Designed for candidates applying to universities, colleges, and professional bodies globally. Accepted by thousands of institutions in the UK, Australia, USA, Canada, and beyond — including all Australian universities and for UK visas.
Education & Professional RegistrationPTE Core
Immigration & PR
Designed specifically for Canadian immigration pathways. Accepted by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for Express Entry, Provincial Nominee Programs, and Canadian citizenship applications.
Canada Immigration & PRPTE Academic is the flagship Pearson English test and the most widely accepted of the two. It is designed to test real-world English as used in academic and professional environments — from lectures and seminars to essays and research discussions.
PTE Academic is approximately 2 hours long (with an optional 10-minute break). The entire test is completed in a single sitting at a Pearson-approved test centre on a computer. There is no separate Speaking test with a human examiner — Speaking tasks are integrated into the exam and recorded by the computer.
The first and longest section combines Speaking and Writing tasks. Speaking responses are recorded through the computer microphone — there is no face-to-face examiner interaction.
A 30–40 minute section testing your ability to understand written academic English through a variety of task types — including fill-in-the-blank, multiple choice, and re-ordering paragraphs.
A 30–45 minute section with audio and video recordings of lectures, conversations, and interviews. Tasks test your ability to understand spoken academic English and take notes effectively.
Global Scale of English (GSE). Most universities require 58–79 depending on the programme.
Separate scores for Speaking, Writing, Reading, and Listening — each on the 10–90 scale.
PTE Core is a newer addition to the Pearson test family, launched to meet the needs of candidates applying for Canadian immigration. It tests the everyday English needed for work and life in Canada — not the formal academic language of lectures and research essays.
PTE Core is approximately 2 hours long, also computer-based and AI-scored. The structure mirrors PTE Academic but the content is oriented toward practical, everyday English communication — workplace conversations, community notices, news broadcasts, and personal correspondence.
The Speaking & Writing section of PTE Core uses conversational, everyday contexts rather than academic lectures or research material. Tasks are similar in structure to PTE Academic but the language and topics are practical and community-oriented.
The Reading section of PTE Core uses the same task types as PTE Academic but with texts drawn from everyday contexts — workplace documents, community notices, newspaper articles, and general-interest topics — rather than academic journals and research passages.
Listening tasks in PTE Core use audio from realistic, everyday scenarios — workplace briefings, news reports, community announcements, and informal conversations — rather than the academic lectures and seminars featured in PTE Academic.
Same Global Scale of English. IRCC requires CLB 7+ (approx. 60+) for Express Entry in most categories.
Individual scores for Speaking, Writing, Reading, and Listening — each mapped to Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB).

Is PTE Academic harder than PTE Core?
PTE Academic uses academic language — lectures, research texts, argumentative essays — which is generally considered more demanding than the practical, everyday English of PTE Core. However, difficulty is subjective: candidates with strong academic backgrounds may find PTE Academic easier, while those with practical work experience in English may adapt more quickly to PTE Core's content.
Can I use PTE Academic for Canada PR instead of PTE Core?
No. IRCC only accepts PTE Core (not PTE Academic) as proof of English proficiency for immigration applications. If you submit PTE Academic scores for a Canadian Express Entry application, they will not be accepted.
How quickly do I receive PTE results?
PTE Academic results are typically available within 2 business days, and often within hours of completing the test. PTE Core results are delivered within 5 business days. Both are accessible via the Pearson online score portal.
Is there a human examiner involved in either PTE test?
No. Both PTE Academic and PTE Core are fully AI-scored, including the Speaking component. There is no face-to-face interaction with a human examiner at any point. Your spoken responses are recorded and assessed by Pearson's automated scoring engine.
How many times can I retake PTE?
Both PTE Academic and PTE Core allow unlimited retakes. You must wait at least 5 days between test attempts. There is no annual limit on the number of times you can sit the exam.
Is PTE accepted in Australia for student visas?
Yes — PTE Academic is accepted by the Australian Department of Home Affairs for student visas. It is also one of the approved tests for Australian permanent residence applications through SkillSelect. PTE Core is not relevant for Australian visas.
What score do I need in PTE Core for Express Entry Canada?
IRCC maps PTE Core scores to the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB). Most Express Entry streams require a minimum of CLB 7, which corresponds to approximately 60 on the PTE 10–90 scale across all four skills. Requirements vary by program — always verify with official IRCC guidelines.
