With IELTS on Paper ending in India after 22 August 2026, almost every future test-taker in Kerala will sit the Computer-Delivered exam. Here's exactly what the interface looks like, how it differs from paper, and how to prepare for the parts that genuinely surprise first-timers.
IDP Education has been explicit: Computer-Delivered IELTS uses the same exam pattern, same difficulty level, and same scoring system as the paper test. Nothing about the content or the standard you're marked against changes — only how you interact with the test.
If you've never sat a computer-based exam before, here's what to expect on test day:
A plain text box with no spellcheck, no grammar-check, and no autocorrect — exactly like Notepad. This catches many first-timers off guard who assume some correction help will be available.
You can highlight text and add notes directly on the passage, similar to underlining on paper, plus a built-in review flag to mark questions to revisit.
Audio plays once through headphones at each workstation, with on-screen note space next to the questions — no more flipping between a question booklet and answer sheet.
A visible countdown timer and a question-navigation panel let you jump between questions and see exactly what's answered versus flagged for review.
Reading and Listening translate almost directly from paper — the skills are identical, only the interaction method changes. Writing is different. On paper, most Kerala students can write 250-300 words comfortably within 40 minutes. On a keyboard, unfamiliar typing speed becomes the bottleneck, not English ability.

Is Computer-Delivered IELTS harder than the paper test?
No. IDP has confirmed the same exam pattern, difficulty level, and scoring system apply to both formats. Speaking is identical in both — always face-to-face with a certified examiner.
Do I type my Writing answers on Computer-Delivered IELTS?
Yes, for the standard format. A hybrid option — IELTS on Computer (Writing on Paper) — is also available, where Listening and Reading are on-screen but Writing is still handwritten.
Is there spellcheck or grammar-check during the Writing test?
No. The on-screen keyboard has no autocorrect, spellcheck, or grammar-check — exactly like a plain text editor. This catches many first-time test takers off guard.
How much faster are Computer-Delivered IELTS results?
Typically 3-5 days, compared to up to 13 days for the paper-based test.
Can I highlight text on screen during Reading?
