From September 2026, IDP Education — IELTS's test co-owner and sole administrator in India — will offer IELTS exclusively through computer-delivered formats. Two options will be available:
The Speaking module is unaffected either way — it continues to be conducted face-to-face with a certified IELTS examiner, exactly as before.
No. IDP has been explicit that the computer-delivered format uses the same exam pattern, same level of difficulty, and same scoring system as the paper test. What changes is the delivery mechanism, not the content or the standard you're being marked against. The computer version also adds a few practical conveniences — an on-screen timer and a simpler interface for navigating between questions.

When does IELTS on Paper end in India?
After 22 August 2026. From September 2026 onward, all IELTS testing in India moves to computer-delivered formats only.
What are the last IELTS on Paper test dates?

Will the test become harder after the switch to computer format?

Yes. IELTS on Computer (Writing on Paper) lets you complete Listening and Reading on a computer while still completing the Writing section by hand.

Only if your preparation has specifically been built around handwriting and you can realistically be ready by 22 August. Otherwise, shifting your preparation to computer format now is usually more practical, since the content and scoring stay identical.
